The journey to the centre of the earth

In a team with op-arch, Lüchinger+Meyer wins the project competition for the construction of a new energy center at the National Sports Center Magglingen. The energy center will one day supply the BASPO buildings with geothermal energy via a district heating network. “The authors have given the topic a lot of thought and developed a project full of character.” In fact, it was a particular pleasure for our structural and façade planners involved to work on this design, which quoted so many references from (building) culture and art and integrated influences – from the eponymous “Saknussem”, the fictional Icelandic alchemist, whose secret writing in Jules Verne’s famous adventure novel prompted the “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, to the reference to the fascinating artwork “the vertical earth kilometer” by Walter De Maria, which was exhibited at documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977, to the constructive reference to the Solothurn School.
“The authors respond strongly to the desired innovative and sustainable character that is manifested in the architecture.” A “showcase” for the new energy center, which evokes various associations, docks onto the existing depot building and unites the two structures into a single unit.

A proven frame structure in solid construction using recycled concrete is proposed for the load-bearing structure. Columns along the façades and a highly stressed central mushroom column support the relatively slender flat ceilings. “The static structure with the centrally arranged mushroom support offers flexibility.” said the jury, welcoming the concept.
The façade design incorporates reuse elements (metal profiles, corrugated and trapezoidal sheets) for the two windowless side façades. The corrugated metal patchwork is treated with a uniform protective coating. The north-east façade of the showcase is fitted with folding doors on the first floor and transparent, insulated Profilit glass on the floors above.

The competition entries can be viewed in a public exhibition until January 24. (Main building, Mon-Fri 8am-6pm / Sat 8am-12pm)
