Ground-breaking ceremony in double shift

It’s the launch for Basel’s generational project. Representatives of the canton, the client and the planning team sent out a strong joint signal on Monday afternoon at the official ground-breaking ceremony for the new Klinikum 2 at Basel University Hospital. In a double constellation, various players picked up their tools to support the start of the construction work symbolically. Including the Director of Health of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, Dr. Lukas Engelberger, Chairman of the USB Board Directors Robert-Jan Bumbacher and Hospital Director Dr. med. Werner Kübler. The GP team was represented by general manager Tossan Souchon (Archipel) and architect Lorenzo Giuliani. Many guests attended the start of the first construction phase, underlining the broad public interest in the project. The structural engineers from Lüchinger+Meyer were of course also present on the Basel construction site, who have been alongside Giuliani Hönger Architekten since the competition success.

With the comprehensive renewal of the infrastructure, the important generational project “Campus Gesundheit” will allow the USB to continue to provide a strong backbone for regional healthcare in the future and to remain an internationally recognized location for advanced medicine, research and training. During the first construction phase the new bed tower will be built which is a reinforced concrete skeleton structure. This will be followed in phase 2 by the deconstruction of the current “Bettenhaus” and the construction of the new “Sockelgebäude” which will replace the current hospital building K2 on Petersgraben.
