From aerodrome to flagship project for innovation

The airfield site in Dübendorf will undergo a highly ambitious transformation in the coming years. The Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich will offer researchers from science and industry a platform for innovation and at the same time act as a flagship project for innovative urban development and sustainability. In the long term, more than 10,000 jobs are to be created on the new campus, spread across offices, laboratory and manufacturing uses, services, catering and leisure facilities. ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich and Zürcher Kantonalbank have been secured as the first tenants or research partners.
The client, HRS Real Estate AG, which is responsible for the site development and realisation of the innovation park, held a broad-based architectural competition with renowned offices and up-and-coming designers.

In order to do justice to the mix of uses and the sustainability goals set, the participants developed special building typologies that can be used sustainably over long periods of time thanks to their flexibility and modularity and have a significantly reduced ecological footprint thanks to the use of new technologies. Seven projects were selected from 28 submitted proposals to be built as part of the first phase of new construction from 2024 to around 2032.
The structural engineers and façade experts at Lüchinger+Meyer are delighted to be involved as partners of successful competition teams in four sub-projects of this major project. In collaboration with E2A, we will further develop the supporting structures for the FLEX and MHUB typologies and with TEN Studio the façade planning for the HALL typology. Both specialist competences support the Copenhagen planners from 3XN in the project planning of the TECH typology.
