Life by the river
The Papieri-Areal in Cham, the approximately eleven-hectare site of the former paper factory on the banks of the river Lorze, will be converted and developed into an attractive mixed-use quarter over the next 10 to 15 years. The site will once be home to around 2000 people and provide around 1000 places for jobs. In 2016, the people of Cham voted for the ambitious large-scale project while the realization of the first construction stage is in full progress at the moment.
A second study contract has now been awarded for the geographical centre of the site. Seven teams submitted drafts for the design of the second stage, consisting of the residential towers of construction plots I and K as well as the replacement of the silo building. Since no team was able to convince the jury with the overall package, the evaluation committee recommended the most successful contribution for each of the construction projects for further processing.
Three buildings, three winners. We are pleased that our civil engineers were able to climb one of the winners’ podiums alongside Büro Konstrukt Architekten. The concept for the rent-residential tower on site K achieved the first place. “Overall, the project convinces with its solid construction concept as well as with the wide range of flats that are offered,” was the jury’s verdict.
The supporting structure of the 15-storey high-rise building consists of an access tower for horizontal stiffening and a two-storey base in reinforced concrete. The useable area around the core will be built in wood-hybrid system construction with prefabricated wood-concrete composite slabs.
