Finest Swiss engineering in structural concrete

The Fédération Internationale du Béton fib is the largest international professional association dealing with structural concrete, supported by 41 national delegations from all 5 continents worldwide. In June 2022, the experts gathered for the 6th fibCongress in Oslo. The Swiss fib-CH group decided to once again publish a special publication on the occasion of the event in order to present the “top achievements in the field of structural concrete” of the past 4 years to the international professional community.
We greatly appreciate that Lüchinger+Meyer was able to contribute with two project reports to the “Structural Concrete in Switzerland” issue. The publication begins in the Buildings section with the technical article “The prestressed concrete structure of Stade de la Tuilière, Lausanne“, in which the authors Andrea Bassetti and Matthias Kunze present the load-bearing system of the stadium shell with its strikingly folded-up corners. The structural solutions as well as the assembly and prestressing concepts used in the realisation are described in detail.
Borja Herraiz’s report on the conversion of the historic Du Pont office building in Zurich in the Conservation of Structures section impressively concludes this successful publication. For the first time, the highly complex conversion project is presented comprehensively in a German-language publication. The innovative use of UHPFR-Concrete for the reinforcement of the existing ribbed slab is covered as well as the strengthening of the shallow foundation with micropiles, the implementation of the structural system modification or the external strengthening of the main transfer beams.

Of course, our two presented buildings are in very good company with many other outstanding projects, such as the “Cité du Temps”-Building of the Swatch Group, the new Zurich Kunsthaus, the Reussthal retaining wall or the renovated Saane Viaduct. The excellent publication “Structural Concrete in Switzerland” has many mothers and fathers, and the constant professional exchange as well as the inspiring discussions of the ingenious solutions of the fellow colleagues are a key factor for the development and the innovative capacity of this discipline.

In the meantime, we have also received a considerable number of copies of the publication, which will enrich our office libraries in the future.
Selected articles from the publication will be presented to a broad Swiss audience in autumn on the occasion of fib-CH’s Concrete Day 2023.
