Winning the Building Award 2023

The joy is enormous! Our project for the conversion of the Felix Platter Hospital in Basel has won the Building Award 2023, Switzerland’s most prestigious engineering prize. With visible pride, our project manager Andreas Gianoli and technical designer Manuel Gomez accepted the award yesterday evening in the KKL Luzern and answered the questions of moderator Christa Rigozzi. They represent the intense exchange of engineering and constructive experience that was essential for the realization of this challenging preservation project.
In her laudatory speech, jury member Judit Solt praised the winning project in the structural engineering category as follows: “Transforming instead of replacing, upgrading instead of destroying, building culture instead of disposable construction – the conversion of the Felix Platter Hospital from the 1960s into a cooperative residential building is a brilliant example of how this can succeed.”
At the same time, the juror praised the client’s courage in preserving the existing building and emphasized the challenging interdisciplinary cooperation as an essential foundation of the project’s success. A constructive cooperation of all actors as the key to the realization of the “Miteinanderhaus”. We are very happy to share the award and the joy with our project partners: Baugenossenschaft wohnen & mehr, Müller Sigrist Architekten, Rapp AG, Lorenz Eugster, durable, Aegerter & Bosshardt, Boess Gruppe, HeiVi AG, NM Fassadentechnik, Implenia Modernisation.

We would also like to congratulate the other winners of the evening: Basler & Hofmann (civil engineering), Kalt+Halbeisen Ingenieurbüro (energy systems and building technology), TTS Inova AG (research and development), Lea Bressan (young professionals) drumrum Raumschule & Queens of Structure (promotion of young talent) and Hermann Blumer (Lifetime Award). In general, a big applause goes to all nominated projects and engineers. Andreas Gianoli rightly pointed out that the award ceremony did not elevate our project to the “best of the best”, but that all nominations were of “fantastic quality”.

Our special thanks go to the organizer Stiftung bilding, the jury around president Viktor Sigrist as well as Baukoma-Marketimpact AG, which accompanied the procedure as the responsible organizer in an exemplary manner up to the crowning evening of the award ceremony.
