2000-watt-living with model character

Review 2021.2: The “parrot” has landed. The completion of the replacement building at Stüssistrasse 58-66, based on the competition project of the same name by Chebbi | Thomet | Bucher Architects, marked the start of the redevelopment of the “Ilanzhof” in Zurich-Unterstrass. The housing estate was built in 1928-1930 according to plans by architect Paul Schumacher. The 335 apartments no longer meet today’s needs and are to be replaced in stages. The first new replacement building on the site, which has now been realized, has a model character in this context.
The competition project had already formulated the goal of resource-saving and low greenhouse gas construction in accordance with the guidelines of the 2000-watt society. The planners consistently implemented this task and developed an economically simple energy and sustainability concept in accordance with the Sia Energy Efficiency Path.

The progressive and social ambitions of the client, Baugenossenschaft Freiblick, are also manifested in the use of the building: The new building provides for a deliberate mix of retirement and family apartments. In addition, two nursing home groups were established on the first floor.
Lüchinger+Meyer engineers and designers were responsible for the structural design of the building, which was constructed as a solid structure. A special feature of the planning was the facade. This was realized from the 1st floor to the attic floor using load-bearing single-stone masonry. On the ground floor, a double-shell exposed concrete wall was used as the facade due to the higher loads.
