The Nidwalden Hospital is located in a picturesque setting directly at the foot of the Stanserhorn. The outpatient treatments significantly increased in recent years as part of the “outpatient before inpatient” development. This makes it urgently necessary to expand the spatial resources of the Stans hospital site – a new medical center is to complement the existing ensemble of buildings.
Butterfly – this is the poetic name of the design by Giuliani Hönger Architekten, which was chosen as the winner in the competition for this new building. The jury attested that the project “creates an ideal starting point for the Medical Center and the existing hospital operations in terms of operation and overall appearance”. The façade-designers from Lüchinger+Meyer were able to support the team in the planning of the photovoltaic elements.
The extension building appears as a striking five-story head building next to the adjacent low-rise building. The use of photovoltaics is planned on the roofs as a synergetic addition to the extensive greening as well as on the wooden element facades.
Here, slender, upright planks equipped with photovoltaic cells are planned, which act as “sun catchers” to protect the usable spaces from glare and overheating, while producing electricity. An interesting play of light and shadow is created, giving the new buildings their lightness.
The use of PV modules with an output of approx. 95,000 kWh/a (equivalent to 36 three-person households) is a commitment to the generation of sustainable, renewable electricity. The resulting reduced operating costs contribute positively to the long-term economic viability of the new medical building.
The plans and models of all eight competition finalists will be on display in the hospital chapel of the Nidwalden Hospital from June 30 to July 11, 2023 and will be freely accessible to the public.
