Ship ahoy! – With joy to the hospital

Healthy people tend to give hospitals a wide berth unless they are employed in the health sector. Nevertheless, there are good reasons why we are heading for a hospital building with joy and curiosity on two weekends in September and October. The former Felix Platter Hospital opens its doors as the new “Miteinanderhaus” on the Westfeld in Basel. Following the motto “conversion instead of demolition”, an exemplary model project has been realised here by transforming the listed building into a residential house.
“Ship ahoy!” – the title of the event combines the majestic shape of the building and the spirit of optimism of the future users: On Saturday, 24 September 2022, the building cooperative wohnen&mehr invites you to discover the new rooms. The best way to do this is via the cascade staircase that runs through the entire building – from the spacious foyer to the roof terrace. From 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., visitors can view model flats, attend presentations in the context of the project and contact the future tradespeople at information tables.

A month later, on Saturday 29 October, architecture will be the focus of the event. Now it is Müller Sigrist Architekten and Rapp AG who are inviting visitors to view the reconstruction. Between 1 and 5 p.m., interested visitors can find out how the basic concept of conversion developed by the planning team in the winning competition design was consistently carried through to the execution. The main focus of the Lüchinger+Meyer structural engineers involved was the complex earthquake retrofitting and the installation of new staircases – an enormous challenge in the existing building.
