Review 2020.8 – Living in community

It is obvious that a residential development located on “Brüderhofweg” is committed to the cooperative spirit. With the completion of the second construction phase last year, the residential estate in Zurich-Unterstrass was completed and the community spirit revived. This is ensured by a neighbourhood restaurant, a multi-purpose hall, community rooms, ateliers and a crèche as components of the development, which is directly adjacent to the Unterstrass FC field. At the same time, the Frohheim building cooperative completed a “mammoth project”, because the replacement buildings on Brüderhofweg, with their 288 flats, comprise more than a quarter of its total stock.

Lüchinger+Meyer worked alongside Steib Gmür Geschwentner Kyburz Architekten in the field of structural design during the nine-year planning and realisation process that followed the successful “Spring Awakening” competition in 2011. The four- to five-storey buildings, designed as massive structures, are spread over four sub-areas, which were realised in two stages.
