Let’s talk about concrete …

The permanent exhibition Werkstückhalle at the ZHAW in Winterthur is part of a research project of the Institute of Structural DesignHere, prototypes on material developments, joining principles and special applications of concrete, cast stone and hybrid constructions from practice are collected and made accessible to students and an interested public in the form of a permanent exhibition. Hands-on, please – through mockups, hand samples and raw materials, the materials and constructions can be experienced both haptically and visually.
Regularly, expert discussions also promote the transfer of knowledge and provide practical experience on the subject of concrete construction. The events are important occasions for networking between teaching, research and practice.

Next Tuesday, March 8, the next expert discussion will take place in the workpiece hall. Architect Thomas K. Keller, civil engineer Hans Seelhofer (Lüchinger+Meyer), foreman Andreas Dombrowski (Stutz construction company) and recycled concrete expert Cathleen Hoffmann will share their experiences on the topic of “System construction with recycled concrete infill – combining in-situ and precast construction”. The discussion will focus on the district heating plants Waldau and Lukasmühle in St. Gallen. For these, Thomas K. Keller Architects and the structural engineers from Lüchinger+Meyer developed a system construction concept for a hall supporting structure that can be extended on all sides and is made of precast concrete elements in combination with in-situ infills of recycled concrete.
