We would very much have liked to use our structural and façade competence for the realisation of a new swimming pool hall in the east of the sports city of Leipzig. However, the fifteen-member jury of the competition for the new East Swimming Hall and Medical Care Centre (MVZ) at Otto-Runki-Platz in Leipzig made a different selection. Nevertheless, we are pleased about the recognition (purchase) of our project proposal, which was developed together with :mlzd.
The chosen triangular shape of the building’s floor plan and the folded roof construction are the most remarkable characteristics of the design. “The urbanistic large figure is structured by a folded roof structure, which gives it an appropriate scale and interior atmosphere,” the jury commented. The roof covers the entire usable area of the new indoor pool and the MVZ. It was designed as a spatial, steel supporting structure which runs parallel to the hypotenuse of the triangle and acts as a folding structure. The triangular folded trusses are supported by a regular and efficient column grid. The main span is a maximum of 24m with a beam height of 2.5m.
The building envelope was designed – in accordance with the urban location – in a robust, low-maintenance construction. This solution also met with the approval of the jury. “The proposed façade material with an almost industrial character could fit the location.” Continuous ribbon windows are partially spanned and protected by perforated trapezoidal sheets or are set off from the accessible terrain. In the area of the MVZ the trapezoidal sheet metal cladding is mechanized. By means of a simple rail system, the trapezoidal sheet metal cladding can be unfolded or closed according to the use of the space.
We congratulate the three prize winners of the competition (gmp, SERO, Czerner Göttsch) and wish them every success in implementing the project!
The designs of all 14 participating offices from the architecture and design competition will be exhibited until 28th of June at the city office on Burgplatz, and then at the IC-E Information Centre, Eisenbahnstraße 49.
