A new piece of town in the west of Lenzburg

The abandoned commercial site ‘Artoz’ and the neighbouring area around the former armoury on the western edge of the town of Lenzburg are about to transform. In the coming years, a new urban building block with predominantly residential use will be created here, possibly supplemented by a cantonal school. A study commission explored the possibilities for developing the site. We are delighted that the project developed by the team led by ‘Galli Rudolf Architekten’ won over the jury. “The judging panel is convinced that an outstanding project has been found that blends in perfectly with the surrounding neighbourhoods in terms of urban planning, open space, and architecture and optimally meets the high requirements for a high-quality, mixed-use neighbourhood building block with a wide range of residential options and a high quality of life.”

The authors propose a differentiated row-like development with a large biodiverse car park. In the centre between the ‘Artoz’ and ‘Zeughaus’ areas, a high-rise building designed as an angular structure and the historic ‘Artozhallen’ form the public focal point of the site.
The supporting structures of the new buildings are characterised by skeleton structures in two materials. The high-rise building is planned as a purely solid construction, simplifying fire protection. Prefabricated beams, which rest on walls and columns, and semi-prefabricated ceilings form the load-bearing system. To reduce material consumption, the ceilings are 16 cm thick and based on a consistent system separation. The remaining buildings are planned as timber structures, with beams and columns made of glulam and ceilings and walls made of cross-laminated timber.
