St. Gallen celebrates its new railway station

Five years after the referendum, it’s finally over: construction noise, occasional disorientation and long detours. The extensive redesign of the station and Bahnhofplatz St. Gallen was celebrated with an inauguration ceremony on August 31 and September 1. Despite continuous rainfall, more than 10‘000 people came to enjoy the cultural program and to visit the ensemble of completed building conversions and new buildings.

Together with the architects giuliani.hönger and the local engineering partner Grünefelder & Lorenz, the structural engineers from Lüchinger+Meyer accompanied the entire project from project planning to implementation. The redesign included the reorganisation of the station forecourt with a new bus station, the reconstruction of the historic station building with station hall and rail travel center, the upgrading of the West pedestrian underpass and the replacement of the new city hall underpass (PU East) with a prominent arrival hall.
