Gaia Mother Tree – In the service of art

From June 30 to July 29, 2018 the main hall at Zurich‘s Main station is characterized by an exceptional installation by the Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto. Gaia Mother Tree – an extraordinary work of art – is all made of hand-knotted cotton strips and resembles of a tall tree. The figure is extending to the roof of the station. The walk-in structure serves as a meeting place and as a place of contemplation amidst the restlessness of the station.

An opening ceremony took place on the evening of June 29, 2018 with Mayor Corinne Mauch, Fondation Beyeler and Ernesto Neto. For our office it was a pleasure to support the project in questions of geometry and form finding as well in checking the load transfer into the existing supporting structure of the hall – a not everyday task in the service of art.
