“Castel” Vaduz – 3rd place in the competition for the new building of the National Hospital Liechtenstein

After nearly 40 years of use, the existing building of the Liechtenstein National Hospital will no longer be able to guarantee up-to-date medical operations in the future. In November 2019, the majority of Liechtenstein’s citizens expressed their support for the construction of an acute hospital on the “Wille Areal” in order to create a modern infrastructure for hospital medical care at a high level in the country. In an exemplary manner, the referendum was quickly translated into planning by those responsible, with the result that a corresponding architectural competition could be announced less than a year later.
The project “Castel” by sam architekten was awarded 3rd prize by the jury, Lüchinger+Meyer supported the design work in the field of structural engineering.

Following its name programmatically, the design sets a compact, cubic volume between Rhine embankment, commercial structures and meadow landscape. The various uses are stacked in the seven-storey building in a functionally sensible way. A clear supporting concept with flat ceilings and columns in an efficient construction grid of 8.40 m divides the solid structure.

All submitted competition entries can be viewed from 28th of November to 2nd of December 2020 in the Spörry Hall on the university campus at Rüfestrasse 6 in Vaduz. (Please note the corona-related special regulations).
