No change of trains from Altdorf to Milano Centrale

It is probably no coincidence that the balloons that accompanied the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the new Altdorf cantonal railway station in September floated out of the hands of 100 schoolchildren from Uri. The “ambassadors of the future” announced symbolically that “a new era in public transport is beginning in the canton of Uri”.
SBB, the canton of Uri, the municipality of Altdorf and the Cantonal Bank of Uri are investing a total of CHF 110 million in this major infrastructure project, which is to become the new hub of public transport on the Gotthard. The construction work will be completed by 2021. By then the people of Uri will have a modern long-distance railway station at their disposal and Altdorf will be the standard stop for Intercity trains on the north-south axis. Zurich and Milan, Lucerne and Ticino are now all within easy reach.

A key component of the development project is the construction of the new building at Bahnhofplatz 1, which is being supported by the Cantonal Bank of Uri. In addition to the bank’s headquarters, new office and retail space will be available here for tenants. The ground floor will then serve as a multifunctional centre for public transport travellers and other customers.  The civil engineers and façade planners at Lüchinger+Meyer, who have been involved in the new building project as part of the team with Buchner Bründler Architekten and Proplaning since the competition’s success, are looking forward to the imminent realisation of the building.
