One quarter of Koch Areal

In just five years, the Koch-Areal in Zurich’s city district 9 will be transformed into a lively, contemporary living and working quarter. The basis for this is a quartet of winning projects from an unconventional competition, which was presented to the public on 14th of May. In order to promote a harmonious diversity of the later quarter at an early stage, the three developers of the site (ABZ, Kraftwerk 1, Senn Immobilienentwicklung) and Grün Stadt Zürich joined forces during the competition phase and jointly evaluated the designs for the three construction sites and the neighbourhood park. The result of this joint action is convincing. The planned quarter promises a balanced mix and close integration of non-profit housing, commerce, culture (with circus!), gastronomy and open space – a new home for 900 people in which living and working together is to play a central role.

Lüchinger+Meyer was also involved in the competition with a sense of community and success – both our structural and façade planners accompanied the design work of Käferstein & Meister and Murat Ekinci Architekten, whose “Blauregen” project won the competition for the commercial building on construction site A (SENN). The commercial building is being honoured as an “identification point for the neighbourhood” and a “new type of mediation machine” whose double-height floors open up a great deal of design scope for the diverse uses. We are particularly pleased with the jury’s praise for the internal structure – here a simple, efficient support system provides great flexibility – and the design of the façades, which adapt to the respective environment.
