The modular building

A building very much to an engineer’s liking: A clearly defined structure, visible load bearing elements, the secondary structural elements implemented as essential design elements, logical and efficient. A design proposal made by Graser Architects and the engineers of Lüchinger+Meyer was able to score first place in the design competition for a commercial building on the Regensdorf Zwhatt site.
The project is characterised by a very simple, repetitive frame structure with a regular column grid. Prefabricated beams and beamed slab elements were proposed. The slabs cantilever on both sides of the building. The space under the slab elements can be used for technical installations.

The jury considers the project to be best suited to accommodate “real, rough trade as well as the finer activities of office work” with its robust and visible load bearing structure.

The new Zwhatt district is currently being constructed on the outskirts of Zurich, directly at the Regensdorf-Watt urban railway station. The district will house diverse forms of living and working. The presented commercial building on construction site G is one of the first buildings to be realised on the development site.
