‘A lot helps a lot’ was the obvious motto yesterday at the ground-breaking ceremony for the realisation of the new Zurich Sports Centre. With Olympic fervour, 12 responsible personalities from (construction-) business, sport and politics made their active contribution to the start of construction. The project could really use this, as the construction project is accompanied by great ambitions. By autumn 2026, a unique polysports centre of excellence is to be built on the current wasteland between Dübendorf and Wangen-Brüttisellen, bringing together more than 30 types of sport under one roof. The sports facilities will be spread over six levels and more than 23,000 square metres, supplemented by medical and educational facilities.
The 80 guests at the event also included structural engineers from Lüchinger+Meyer, who appeared yesterday without tools but have been involved in the project since the start of planning alongside HRS Real Estate and brunner weibel architekten. With its naturally large spans and the nested arrangement of uses in the compact volume, the building poses major engineering challenges, which the structural engineers met with a concrete-steel-timber hybrid construction and a skilful combination of load-bearing systems.
